Hamburg caterer runs accommodation for Ukrainian protection seekers in the former Sofitel Hotel

Hamburg’s former Sofitel am Alten Wall faced demolition after its closure in June 2021 due to low demand of business travelers. Rolling Taste, the catering company, has converted the 223-room hotel into accommodation for protection seekers from Ukraine and provides the residents with three meals a day.

Hamburg – Many hotels in Germany are providing temporary accommodation for refugees from Ukraine. At the beginning of March, the city of Hamburg decided to turn the former Sofitel am Alten Wall into refugee accommodation. The municipal social enterprise Fördern & Wohnen rented the property and commissioned Rolling Taste to run it. Rolling Taste has the necessary operational experience in the hotel and catering industries and catering and was happy to accept the challenge.

After a non-bureaucratic takeover on March 10, 2022, the new operators quickly got an overview of all areas and room distribution and converted the previous event rooms into dining rooms for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Rolling Taste is gearing up for a capacity of 500 people and 1,500 meals per day. Event spaces in the property were converted into dining halls and additional multi-purpose spaces, for example, a shop for donated clothing, a store for donated hygiene products, or a large game and children’s playroom.

Behind the scenes, the technical requirements for smooth operations also had to be put in place quickly. For reservation management and inventory management, Rolling Taste approached Munich-based cloud platform provider Apaleo. In a matter of days, the property management system was set up to manage rooms occupancy and handle catering billing in a straightforward manner.

The accommodation is already fully operational; on 22 March, the first refugees arrived at the former Sofitel on Alter Wall. Rolling Taste is grateful for donations of bunk beds and mattresses and is looking for part-time staff to help run the operations.

Apaleo donates the entire proceeds from the project to #EveryBedHelps, an initiative of the Alliance of German Serviced Apartments Provider that connects refugees with serviced apartment and hotel providers. About Rolling Taste

Rolling Taste was founded in 2005. The founders no longer wanted to work in companies that did not represent their values. It started very small and the two even transported their catering from A to B on the subway. With a lot of passion and ambition, they built up a company that today works with many large companies, such as OMR. Today, Rolling Taste consists of a total of 15 employees, three large vans, 4 smokers, and several locations.
